Check out what Pam had to say about Degree!
What brought you to Degree/Group Training in the first place?
While I have done a lot of running in the last decade or so, I had always avoided strength training - even though I knew it would help me. I just didn't know how to get started on my own and always found one reason or another not to dig in.
This past year, my running dropped off due to some nagging knee-pain issues. I also noticed that I wasn't as strong or confident as I would like to be in general. This summer, the timing was right and I took the leap to check out Degree Fitness. My goals were to learn new things, build strength and feel more confident in all areas of my life, with an ultimate goal of coming back to running better than ever!
What was your first impression? How has that changed?
My first impression was that everyone was kind and welcoming and patient. (thank goodness!) This was really important to me because I can easily get stuck in panic and embarrassment when I'm not sure what I'm doing. Finding out things like the required on-ramp, small class sizes, and coaches demonstrating moves - even for the things you maybe should already know, helped me settle in and trust the process.
These things are still all true! I can now add how friendly and supportive my fellow gym-mates are, how fun partner workouts can be (I was so scared to come to a Saturday), and that as long as I'm showing up for myself and trying my best, the rest will figure itself out.
What was your first “bright spot”?
I don't remember the exact order but some of the early ones were adding more height to my plate steps and squatting without a bench. Also lots of "aha" moments when a movement finally clicked and made sense - those are still happening.
What are you working on now?
Getting to box steps (instead of plates) and getting to a deeper lunge are both on my radar right now. Continuing to learn new things and build more confidence will be constant goals for me. I'm also trying to figure out how hard to push (where are my limits and how to find them without getting hurt).
What is your advice for someone who is thinking about starting at Degree?
Don't be afraid to say what you need. Ask the questions! ask for a second demonstration, or tell the coach when something just isn't working for you and ask what can you do instead.
Even if you don't trust yourself - trust those around you when they tell you how well you're doing!
