Walking is something we do every day as we go about our daily lives, often taken for granted until an injury or medical issue happens that changes the way we move or feel when we walk.
There are many benefits to making active walking a part of your fitness and health routine. Active walking is more than the steps we take throughout the day. It is taking a set period of time and moving at a brisk or variable pace to increase your heart rate. Walking is also easier on the joints, can be done anywhere and set to your time schedule. Check out your area's parks and walking trails and enjoy what your community has to offer!
A regular walking schedule can help improve your cardiovascular fitness and increase your energy levels. When we get the heart pumping faster we move more oxygen throughout our body helping it work more efficiently.
Walking can improve your mood, reducing stress and tension we hold in as it releases endorphins that help make you feel better.
When we are able to get outside and enjoy the nature around us we add in the benefits of fresh air. Or enjoy time with friends as you walk to encourage each other to keep moving! All things that can work towards improving our mental health.
As we age we lose bone mass and that happens quicker when we are less active and starts sooner than we think. A regular walking routine can help build stronger bones and muscles. The old saying "use it or lose it" is true with our bones and muscles as well. Walking can help with our balance and coordination as well which also reduces our risks of fall and breaking bones.
Walking and adding in resistance training can help you lead a more active lifestyle, reduce your chances of falls and serious injuries as we age.
