We all have different reasons for a fitness journey falling to the wayside or even not starting one. Either way, starting or starting again can be hard. Maybe we don't feel confident in how we move, look or feel in a gym or how our body moves due to injuries, health or joint issues. We can be our own worst critics and we need to learn to give ourselves grace. Taking that first step through the front door is the hardest step but can be the best thing we do for ourselves.
Finding your place to get started is an important part of helping you stick with your goals to a healthier and stronger you. Here are a few ways that may help you change the way you are looking at your journey to a stronger and healthier you.
1. Before starting check with your Doctor if you have not been active or involved in exercise due to any health or injury issues, or if you have any concerns. By making sure you are ready or confirming any restrictions you need will make your experience back to exercise a more positive time. Open communication with your coach helps them plan ahead, whether you're in a Group Training setting or Personal Training.
2. Start slow and build up your routine. If we go too hard and fast, we'll end up stiff and sore and we are more likely to give up. Slow and steady is more likely to win the race, building strength and endurance. and progressing at a pace that is realistic to you.
3. When you start, find a way to track your progress that works for you. Keep it simple and retest after a set time. A few examples could be to track how far you walk in 5 minutes or set a timer for 1 minute and see how many pushups or squats you can do in that time. Some people like to pick a favorite workout and repeat it every few months to compare the results as a gauge to mark progress.
4. Accountability! Tell someone your goals and ask them to hold you to them and encourage you on your journey. It is much easier to quit when no one knows we are even trying. Find a workout buddy so it is harder to say "I'll go later" - but then later never comes.
5. Hire a personal trainer! This gives you accountability and a personal training plan that is geared directly to your needs and goals.
6. Join a group class that is geared to your goals or your style of training!
