Most people want more energy, and often we start blaming our diet when we don't. While there are no specific foods that will give you that energy boost, there are definitely nutrition strategies that can help keep our energy up throughout the day and avoid those big slumps.
Here's 3 nutrition tips for better energy:
1. Are you eating enough? Many factors can cause us to have low energy from not eating enough. Are you too busy for meals with your work schedule? Are you on a restrictive diet? Do you just forget to eat something? Please note that coffee, tea, energy drinks, and diet coke all do not count as meals or food in this context. Calories from food are literally energy. If we're not eating enough overall, we are literally lacking energy.
2. Are you eating balanced meals and snacks? Balanced meals and snacks include a combination of protein foods, carbohydrates, fats, and fibre. This combination will make sure that you have energy now, and not leave you crashing 5 minutes later. Take a look at the meals and snacks you had today - are there any that are missing some of these components?
3. Are you eating consistently? If we know we're eating enough and that are meals are fairly well balanced, let's look at how we're spacing those throughout the day. If we have meals or snacks that are too small, we might become overly hungry. If we then have ones that are too big to compensate, we're going to be feeling sluggish as our body works on digesting and processing that food. This may take some practice, and learning to listen to your body. The goal is to come to the next meal or snack feeling ready to eat and somewhat hungry, not excessively hungry or still full.
