The busy holiday season is over, it's a new year, Mother Nature can’t decide on the weather and you find it hard to get motivated or you are feeling out of sorts for reasons you may not even be aware of! The winter blues, seasonal depression or just tired from the last few years of not knowing what's next!
The reasons may differ from person to person and our coping strategies are just as numerous. One thing to consider is checking on the way that we talk to ourselves or the way we see ourselves. How much negative energy are we bringing to the table without even realizing it? It is an easy thing that happens and we don’t always notice it. Adjusting the way we think can play a major role in the way that we look at things and in turn help to get out of the blahs that this time of year can bring on.
Take time to see how you are looking at yourself, your work, your relationships or anything that feels off in your life. How are you feeling, what are your comments or conversations sounding like? Are you seeing a pattern of negativity or positivity?
Let’s practice some ways to change the negatives to positives in the way we look at ourselves and the people around us.
1. Give a compliment –not just to get one in return. Think about how you feel when someone gives you an honest compliment, your day is just a little brighter. The saying “giving is better than receiving” rings true for compliments as well.
2. Write down the things that went well today, no matter how small–when you write them down you can actually see the positives in your day, taking away some of the negatives that we tend to focus on. Not a list maker? Go over them in your head as you head home or before bed.
3. Get moving! Take a walk outside or get to the gym if you go! Regular daily movement is important not only for your physical health but your mental health as well. Plan in your exercise the same way you would any other appointments to stay on track!
This is just a short list but can be a start to a more positive way of looking at life!
