Have you noticed that as the temperature drops you feel a little more intensity in the normal aches and pains in your joints and muscles? Even if you aren’t affected by joint or muscle conditions, you may still feel less flexible and sorer than normal during the colder months.
Often the main reason we feel this way is because the majority of people tend to slow down during the winter months.
We don’t get out and walk if it is too cold or the slippery and snowy covered roads or paths make it too difficult to walk on safely. It is just too comfortable in our warm houses to get out and go!
Here are a few tips to help combat some of the stiffness we may be experiencing.
Drink your water! Not sure how much you have been drinking? Start tracking how much water you actually are drinking. In the cooler months it is easy to forget the water as we tend to reach for the warmer coffees and teas. When we are even slightly dehydrated our pain levels can feel higher than usual. Water is an important factor in overall body health!
Dress in layers! Staying warm by wearing layers of thinner materials vs a big heavy layer allows you to add or remove a layer as you transition from the cold and warmth. Wearing a close fitting inner layer also keeps the heat in close to your body.
Get moving! Our joints and muscles are meant to be used and moved to keep them working efficiently! If we are dealing with issues such as arthritis or other medical conditions, keeping strong and mobile is important to maintain as much movement in our daily lives as possible. If you don’t like the cold outside, set a timer and walk in your house on a regular schedule, adding in stairs if you have them.
Stretching daily! Taking the time to stretch each day will help keep movement in the joints and muscles, reducing some of the discomfort from sore areas. A good way to start is before you get up in the morning in the comfort of your bed start with some ankle and wrist circles to get the joints more mobile.
