We all know staying hydrated is important, but it's even MORE important during the hot and humid summer months.
For most adults, we need about 30-35ml of water per kg of body weight, OR take half your weight in pounds, and drink that number of ounces of fluid per day. For those with a very low body weight, the amount may need to be increased. For those with a very high body weight, the amount can often be slightly lower.
If you find you're not meeting your fluid needs, there's many things we can do. For those who just forget, keeping a glass or water bottle with you can remind you to drink. A straw can even help you drink more per sip!
For those who don't like the taste of water, try adding flavourings like sliced citrus, frozen fruit, cucumber or herbs. Artificially sweetened water flavourings can also help you drink more water, and are usually not a concern in moderation.
Try to drink your water and other fluids throughout the day - not just during and right after your workout. Aim to come to your workout already fairly well hydrated, rather than having to play catch-up afterwards.
If you're often exercising in hot and humid conditions, find that you sweat a lot, or know you lose a lot of salt in your sweat, adding electrolyes may help you stay better hydrated. These can come in sports drinks with extra carbohydrates to keep you going, or are available in sugar-free formulations. If you ever find you're just feeling "off" after a very hot and sweaty workout or are experiencing more muscle cramps during the warmer months, electrolytes may help avoid this.
Worried about having to run to the bathroom all the time if you're drinking more? Increase how much you're drinking SLOWLY over several days or weeks to help your body adjust.
While it's important to drink enough and your needs may increase when it's hot out, there is little benefit to drinking excessive amounts of water on a regular basis.
