It's almost the August long weekend! For many of us, this means BBQs, family get-togethers, road trips, or otherwise being out of our normal routines and habits. If you're making diet changes, this can be stressful and hard to navigate. How on earth do you make your healthy eating habits stick?
First, let's take a minute to think about your priorities for this weekend. Nutrition goals are important, but what else? Your priorities might include enjoying time with family you don't see often, taking time to relax, or enjoying new experiences. Take some time to see where these priorities can support your goals, or where they may conflict with them. If you're going to a family BBQ, you may be able to still eat fairly healthily and enjoy time with loved ones. If you're traveling, you may need keep an eye out for healthy options, or accept that not every meal will be perfectly balanced - and that's ok.
Often, you'll be able to find a balance of healthy habits and indulgence. Maybe you enjoy some special meals or treats, but prioritize vegetables where you can. Maybe you have more alcoholic beverages than you usually would but also focus on drinking enough water. Nutrition doesn't have to be "all or nothing", unless we're referring to allergies or other conditions where a specific food causes lasting damage or discomfort.
If family and friends just don't "get it", that's ok. If you feel any comments are meant to taunt you or provoke a reaction, just ignore them. If you feel someone is asking a genuine question about how your habits have changed, feel free to give them a few details. Try to avoid telling them what they "should" do and focus on what's working well for you. This is about you, not them!
Finally, after the weekend is over, there's no reason to try and "make up" for how you've eaten - that's more likely to send us into a cycle of over-doing it and then restricting. Make an effort to return to your normal habits, including balanced meals, enough fluid, workouts, and any supplements.
When we're focusing on nutrition goals or any kind of diet plan, that plan should have enough flexibility in it to allow you to enjoy your life. If it doesn't, you may not be able to continue with it long-term. If your plan is so restrictive that the thought of special events or holidays stresses you out, it can be worth reassessing how sustainable your diet is.
