There are many reasons you might want your family to be more involved with healthy eating. Maybe you have young (or not so young) kiddos and want to pass along healthy habits. Maybe you're trying to make changes yourself and want to make your goals fit with the way your family currently eats.
No matter the goal, check out these tips to help you bring your family along for the ride with healthy eating.
1. Ask what they want to eat or try!
Kids (and many adults) are more likely to be excited about new foods or less-favourite foods if they are involved in the decision process. When planning meals, ask for input from your family when you're able. What vegetable would they like to have on the side? Is there a meal you haven't had in a while they would like? This can also sometimes mean less decisions for you!
2. Explore new foods together! Look for new recipes, or research a new cuisine. The novelty can be exciting to everyone! Summer is also the perfect time to see new produce at your local farmers' market or farm stand. See what's in season, and then learn how to prepare it!
3. Get everyone in the kitchen!
If you're the main cook at home, this may not be a strategy for your busiest days. But when you do have time, try to rally everyone to cook together. For your partner, this could be a good time to connect over food and work on something together. For kids, this can be a great way to develop food skills that they'll take into adulthood.
4. Model the habits you want to see. Again, this may be geared towards kids, but our habits can rub off on adults family members as well. Think about the habits you want to see in your family - enjoying balanced meals, honouring hunger cues, being curious about new foods, or whatever else might be important to you. Do you practice these habits as well? Even without saying anything, what you do will impact your family and their habits.
