If you're anywhere on the internet, or near a magazine stand at the grocery store, you've already seen programs being promoted that are guaranteed to get you that perfect "beach body" by summer.
Please consider this post your pre-summer pep talk about bodies. We're not aiming for loving them today, we're just aiming to not let thoughts about our bodies take over our life or ruin our summer.
If your body doesn't look the way it did in summers past, that's ok. In fact, it's very normal for bodies to change over time - especially for women! Imagine if instead of fighting to look the way we used to, we just accepted that bodies change and that your body could be very healthy at a variety of sizes over your lifetime? How much more energy could we spend thinking about literally anything else?
It's also worth remembering that you may never look like the cover of a magazine or a post on Instagram - and that's ok. In fact, the person on the cover of the magazine may not even look like that. That's what photo editing is for! Everyone's genetics and lifestyle are wildly different. An attainable and maintainable shape for one person may be completely out of reach for the next. And again, that's ok! Do the best you can not to compare yourself to others (either in real life or on the internet).
Your body is actually the least interesting thing about you. Think about the people in your life that you love. Do you love any of them solely because of how they look in a bathing suit? Sure, you may love your partner's butt, but you wouldn't love them less if it were different. The people in your life feel the same about you! If thoughts about your body are holding you back from fully participating in life this summer, remember that your body is probably one of the least important things about you. It's just a body. Changing it would not make you funnier, smarter, or more fun to be around.
Does all of this mean we should just give up our exercise and healthy eating habits? Of course not! Health is still important, but health does not have a specific "look" either. So this summer, let's spend less time thinking about bodies and more time enjoying the season!
