Should you eat 3 meals each day? Or 6 small meals? Should you stop eating at a certain time? It's hard to know what to do when it sounds like everyone gives you a different answer!
Like many nutrition questions, the answer is this: it depends!
It depends on what fits with your normal schedule. It depends how much you like to eat at once. It depends on what you're used to.
If you're someone who has always eaten 3 square meals a day with no snacks in between, and that fits with your current life and daily schedule, that's probably the best option for you.
If you're someone who doesn't feel great eating a lot at once and gets hungry often, eating 3 smaller meals and including balanced snacks in between is probably a better option for you.
If you're a very active individual or need fuel between meals for a workout, you might need a snack or two outside of your meals.
If you get hungry overnight or often wake up feeling like you're starving, you might need an evening snack before bed.
If you're someone who gets indigestion or isn't able to sleep well if they eat too close to bedtime, having an evening snack is probably not the best option for you.
If you find yourself getting hungry between meals on a regular basis and then overeating at meals, including snacks may help you have more consistent energy and avoid being overly hungry.
If your schedule changes often and you don't know when you'll be hungry, having the option of balanced snacks between meals might be the best option for you.
If you have diabetes, other blood sugar issues, irritable bowel syndrome, or other digestive issues, you may need a different eating schedule - but you're already talking to a dietitian about that, right?
The bottom line is, every single person, and their appetite, schedule, preferences and body physiology is different from the next person.
How cool! But that means that the "perfect eating schedule" will never be a one-size-fits-all deal. You can find what works best for you and be confident in that.
If you're struggling to find the right eating schedule or pattern for your life and goals, working with a dietitian is the best way to get started.
