What brought me to CrossFit in the first place you may ask? Well, the credit goes to my sister, Danika. We had seen lots of posts on Facebook and the float in the Seaforth Santa Claus Parade and we were both very curious. She convinced me to try it out with her when Degree CrossFit moved to Railway Street.
This opportunity showed up at a time in my life where I was refocusing on what was important to me. It came at a time when I was on a mission to try something new every month. Although I was wondering what had I gotten myself into, I knew it was something I could try out and if it wasn’t the best fit for me, at least I could say I checked it out.
The first time stepping into the gym was done on my own, as my sister was away at school that week. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t scared, and slightly intimidated. I didn't know anyone and was afraid when I couldn't do something, that I’d be embarrassed.
Looking back, that was the silliest thing ever as I know now, everyone is learning new things, or they may be working on different things then what I am learning.
When I walked through that door, I was very impressed. This wasn’t your typical gym. It was tastefully decorated, clean, safe, smelt fresh and very organized. The gym wasn’t the size of a warehouse building, but not so small that there wasn’t an area for an office. The staff were right there to greet me upon arrival, they walked me through the process for check in, showed me where everything was located and guided me through my first class - which went by very quickly! By the time I went home, I knew the name of ten more people whom I continued to see the rest of the week for that one hour. After each class I became just a bit more confident and familiar.
My first impression of the CrossFit or "functional fitness" training style, was that no matter your current physical state, you could do something, as it provides endless options and variety. I remember thinking, how could a workout with a PVC pipe make me hurt so much?! That was a great way to realize I had more to my body then I thought! This style of training continues to provide lots of variety and endless options, for any sort of day you may be having. So come join us.
The workout may look tough, but I can promise you that you’ll challenge yourself, have fun, hear cheers coming your way, smile and get a great workout in!
