Have you heard of electrolytes? If you're around the health and fitness space, this buzzword has probably crossed your radar! But what are they? And why do they matter for you?
Electrolytes are micronutrients that play a variety of roles in our body. This includes sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium. They play a role in muscle and nerve function, and help keep our fluids balanced to stay properly hydrated. If we're not getting enough electrolytes, we might be more prone to muscle cramps or headaches, and feel nauseous or excessively fatigued. This becomes a bigger concern for active people in warmer weather because we lose electrolytes in our sweat. If you've ever noticed salt stains on your clothes or hats after a workout, you're definitely losing electrolytes.
Most people get enough electrolytes through their normal food intake. However, if you notice you are feeling off or experiencing cramping after exercising in hot weather, focusing on replacing electrolytes might help you feel better. You can find electrolyte supplements pretty easily. These can be either a sweetened sports drink that also helps replenish your energy stores for longer periods of activity, or one that just contains the electrolytes if we don't need the extra carbohydrates at that time. Some people even make their own electrolyte concoction by adding salt (for sodium) and citrus juices (for potassium) to water!
So do you need an electrolyte supplement? The answer depends! If you're taking part in less intense activity in cooler weather, probably not. But if you're doing more intense or longer periods of exercise, or you're active in very hot weather, this might be a great tool for you!
