If you spend time looking at nutrition and fitness content on social media, you might have noticed more and more information out there about something called "Intuitive Eating". It's even starting to show up in popular magazines! You might be wondering if this is the next best diet for you, or how it might fit with your goals.
Today we'll unpack some of the common questions about Intuitive Eating to find out if this is something that makes sense for you!
What is Intuitive Eating?
Intuitive Eating is a framework and health approach that can help you move away from dieting, respect your body's natural size and shape, and improve your relationship with food.
Intuitive Eating involves letting go of food rules and getting more in tune with your body's needs and preferences around food - and movement!
Is Intuitive Eating a diet?
Diets are usually designed to help you control your body's shape or size. With the principles of Intuitive Eating, we're taking a step back from the goal of trying to change our body and moving away from dieting.
How will my body change with Intuitive Eating?
We have no way of knowing how someone's body will change when they start eating more intuitively. Some people may lose weight, some may gain weight, some may stay the same, and some may fluctuate.
Do I just eat whatever I want whenever I want? That doesn't sound like it's good for me!
At the beginning of the Intuitive Eating process, many people find they may be reaching for foods they've kept "off limits" up until now, or find they eat more than normal. While that can be scary, it's a normal response to letting go of food restrictions and rules you might have had before.
How can I prioritize nutrition while eating intuitively?
One of the principles of Intuitive Eating is "Gentle Nutrition" - this is the idea that we can bring in helpful aspects of nutrition as they're applicable to our health. Maybe that means making sure you're properly fueled for workouts, increasing fibre for bowel and heart health, or eating balanced meals for satisfaction and long-term health.
With no rules, there's no way to fail at eating well with Intuitive Eating.
How do I know if Intuitive Eating is for me?
If you're ready to really change your relationship with food, get away from the dieting rules you've lived by, and embrace your body the way it is, learning more about Intuitive Eating might be the option for you.
