“Yoga allows you to find an inner peace that is not ruffled and riled by the endless stresses and struggles of life.”
- BKS Iyengar
Yoga comes in many different styles and movements. In fact, there are over 100 different styles of yoga practices; some fast paced and intense, some slower and gentler. Finding the one that works for you is the key to get the most out of your yoga practice.
Why do I enjoy restorative yoga practice?
It helps to relieve stress and let it go when tension or stress levels are high. I can find a pose that helps to open and relax muscles that are tight or where I hold my tension. On busy days where the mind does not shut down at night, settling in on a pose and using a calming breathing technique helps to find a better night sleep as it is a way to teach your mind to slow down and let it go, even if it is just a short time, and I feel more able to handle the day ahead.
Restorative yoga allows you the time to really slow down and rest in the pose for longer periods of time. It is a deeply relaxing style of yoga that can help you move from an active state to a receptive state, which can allow you to release or let go of tensions or stresses that you may be holding on to - even the ones we may not realize we are.
We use props such as blocks, blankets, pillows, or a combination of them to support you in the chosen pose and let you truly relax for a longer period of time, anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes. You want to create a quiet, darkish, safe and warm environment that lets you shut off your mind and relax your body.
That is why most yoga sessions end in a rest period or Savasana: a time to relax and take in the practice you just did. Your heart rate has time to slow down, your body to rest and relax giving you a feeling of calm and a sense of wellbeing.
During a restorative yoga class you may only do a few poses the whole class. Each pose is designed to help you find that state of relaxation and allow the mind and body to be open to the experience. As with all practices of yoga or meditations, each day is a different experience and your yoga guide will lead you through and assist as needed. If at any time you are uncomfortable with the pose you simply come out of it and find a comfortable position to relax in.
