We are coming up to the most wonderful time of the year again, The Open!
It’s coming around again - February the 16th will be the day that the first Open workout will drop. It will only be three weeks long this year.
The Open will be a great time to come together and cheer on fellow members.
If you have been to any of my classes for the past little bit you might have heard me reference The Open a time or two. I just really like The Open! So what is The Open? The Open is an online event for athletes around the world to compete for a spot at the CrossFit Games, which so far have been hosted in the U.S.A. Like most years, every Thursday starting February 16th, CrossFit will have a live event where a couple of Games Athletes go head to head when they release the workout.
These workouts will vary every week but they will look very similar to the type of workouts that we do in our gym.
If you are to sign up for The Open through CrossFit's website, you can submit your score before Sunday and have your score on the worldwide leaderboard and see where you place in the World, Canada, or even just Ontario. While this can be very intimidating, it is all meant for fun and there is no pressure to sign up. You can still record your scores in ZenPlanner just like any other workout that we do in the gym
At Degree, the Open is a fun event that we do every year. We will do The Open workout on Friday and Saturday of the week that the workout is released. The nice thing about The Open is you do not need to do the workout the exact way that CrossFit has it programmed. Just like any workout that you do in the gym, there are always alternatives to the movements and scaling options to help you get the best out of the workout. Probably the biggest bonus of doing The Open (and my personal favourite) is that you get a judge to count your reps when you are doing the workout, which is awesome. Unless there is skipping; skipping is really hard to count. If this is your first time doing The Open it is always good to record the score from your workouts because we have seen in the past that one of the workouts is usually repeated, and they can show up in the regular programming throughout the year.
It is a wonderful time of the year, no matter who you are. Can’t wait to see what 23.1 holds!
