Now that we understand what stress is from the blog above, what are some ways that we can mediate these feelings?
One way we can do this is by the food we eat - that's right!
What we eat has a huge impact on not just how our body functions, but how our hormones work, and how we feel physically and mentally.
You know when you've downed a ton of fast food, then, afterwards you feel that elusive crash where you're tired, sometimes people experience achiness, or, it can cause higher levels of anxiety for various reasons.
If we know that we're going to be under acute or chronic stress, we can look to fuel our body with food we know will make us feel good.
This isn't to say that one food is better than the other, it's more of a self discovery for you to find out what foods make you feel good in your body and your mind!
Try this: Over the next few days, pay close attention to how the food you eat makes you feel.
For example, if you often stop at the coffee shop for a double double, a muffin and breakfast sandwich, where then you're staring a few hours later and have a headache.
Maybe try this instead:
- 2 Milks, 1 Sugar, 1 Breakfast Sandwich (no muffin, use an English muffin option)
- Program your coffee maker the night before at home so it brews for you when you wake up
- Try things like overnight oats, make your own 'egg-muffins', or, there are many decent meal replacement shakes out there if you're in a pinch!
We're not trying to restrict ourselves (that will cause a whole other batch of issues!), rather, we want to tune into our body and what it needs.
When we fuel our bodies with things that we consciously enjoy, and things that work well with our unque make up, you'll feel:
more energetic
better recovery from your workouts
less brain fog
a sense of self efficacy (that "I can do this!" feeling)
