Do you pack a lunch for work? How about packing lunches for kiddos for school? It can get overwhelming and tedious trying to put something semi-nutritious and satistfying in a bag every single day.
Here's some ideas to make lunch-packing a little bit easier! These are geared for adults, but the same ideas will work for many kids as well!
To avoid drowning in all the possible things you could pack, narrow your meal down to a five categories, and pick one thing that fits in each: protein, starch, vegetable, fruit, and fun food. Proteins include meat, fish, cheese, yogurt, pulses, and nuts. Starches could include crackers, bread, or pasta. Vegetables could be raw, cooked, or salad, while fruit could be whole, chopped, or applesauce. Fun foods could be any small treat meant to give you a boost in satisfaction to get through the rest of the day.
Getting stuck trying to make a cohesive meal? Don't worry about it! Try using whatever you have on hand to make a "snack lunch". Try to pick whatever is easy from the categories above and don't stress about whether it's perfect. As long as these are foods you like, it will still be fairly satisfying and cut down on some of the mental effort.
If you prefer meals that go together a bit more but don't want to have to make a decision every day all week, try packing the same things every day for the week. Make sure you have enough for the week on the weekend, and then just pack the same thing. If you're someone who's ok eating the same thing over and over, this can hugely cut down on your daily mental decisions.
Planning for leftovers to use in lunches can also be an easy way to prep a lunch ahead of time without too much extra work. Just ensure there's enough dinner the night before to make a serving away for lunch the next day!
There's no wrong way to make a packed lunch! Try one or a few of these strategies and see what's the right fit for you!
