The topic of when to eat is a hot one on the internet these days. Should you wait to eat? Stop eating early? Eat 6 small meals? 3 big ones?
The shortest answer is that it's up to you.
Here's the longer answer: everyone's bodies and needs are going to be completely different, so there's no "one size fits all" answer.
Here's some things to think about when you're considering how to time your meals and snacks:
What does your schedule look like? From a practical standpoint, this is important but often forgotten. Think about your home life, work schedule, gym routine, and anything else you have going on. If an eating schedule being promoted online won't work with your real life, it probably doesn't make sense for you.
When are you actually hungry? Not really ready to eat dinner at 6pm and would like to wait until 7? Great! Finding that you're really hungry at 11am and can't focus? Time for some lunch or a snack! The goal is to come to our meals and snacks ready to eat but not so overly ravenous that we won't enjoy our food. We can adjust our meals and snacks to make this happen. Usually this means having a meal or snack every 3-4 hours but may look different for each person.
How does your body feel? You'll need to tune-in to your body a bit more to answer this. Listen to when your body tells you it's low on energy, even if you're not feeling your stomach rumble. It could be a sign we need a snack, not an eighth cup of coffee. Similarly, are there times when your eating makes your body feel heavy or not so good? If a big snack right before a workout doesn't leave your feeling great, let's make it a smaller or earlier snack. If eating too close to bedtime causes heartburn, we might want to move that meal up.
Things can change day to day! The three factors above can all fluctuate daily, or depending on the season of life we're in and that's ok! There's no health benefit to eating at the exact same time every single day. The better we get at listening to our bodies, the easier it is to know what it needs!
Like so many other questions about nutrition, there is no one perfect answer for everyone. At the end of the day, it's all about what works best for you in real life.
