Most adults are worried about whether they're eating too much. But when was the last time you thought about whether you're eating enough?
Many of us end up undereating because we're so scared of gaining weight.
This makes perfect sense. We're constantly bombarded with messages about how much happier we'll be if we lose weight, celebrities telling to only have bone broth for lunch, and magazines showing off low calorie recipes at the grocery check-out. And while there definitely are people who overeat, that doesn't mean that eating less, or trying to eat as little as possible, is always a better option.
In the short term, undereating can lead to feeling low in energy or "hangry" (angry because you're hungry). It can also impact your concentration and decrease how much effort you can put into your workouts. Trying to eat less earlier in the day can also lead to overeating less nutritious foods later as your will power wears down. In the longer term, it can lead to nutritional deficiencies, since its hard to get all of your nutrients in when you're not eating enough.
Human metabolisms are also very complicated - and very adaptable! If you're chronically undereating, your body does have the ability to adapt to burn fewer calories throughout the day, and can actually start to store more energy as fat stores in case you need it for later.
So what can we do about it? Making the mental shift from trying to eat as little as possible to trying to actually meet your nutrition needs can be hard! You may need help from a Registered Dietitian to confirm if you're eating enough, how much you should be eating, and support you in getting there.
