Did you know that your heart beats about 100,000 times a day?
This fist size muscle is responsible for pumping blood throughout our body keeping our organs and muscles working throughout our lives! Just like every other muscle we have it works best when we take care of it. Leading a sedentary lifestyle, genetics and aging all play a role in how well our hearts work. Generally our heart muscles start to work harder when we hit the late fifties early sixties due to the aging process, if we lead an inactive lifestyle it may start sooner. But like any muscle, the heart can stay stronger and healthier through the life choices we make with eating choices and exercise. Various studies have shown that improvements can be achieved even when we start a fitness journey later in life.
Here are a few tips to keep our hearts working to the best they can:
*Get moving!
Cardiovascular exercise keeps our muscles stronger and helps our joints move better. Finding the cardio exercises you enjoy is a key factor in sticking to it. Get out for walks, running, swimming, cycling or a variety of activities that get the heart pumping. If you haven’t done anything for a while, start with a shorter time or distance and slowly increase it over time. Change things up by alternating the speed you go, for example if you enjoy walking, add in some faster walking in between your normal pace to increase the heart rate a little. Any cardio activity we do outside adds in the benefits of fresh air and sunshine!
* Add in strength or resistance training
This will help build and maintain muscle strength as well as improve our range of motion in our joints. If we are dealing with any limited range of motion due to mobility concerns, building strength in the muscles surrounding the affected joints may reduce pain and improve our movement patterns
*Improving our eating habits
What and how much we eat can be a contributing factor in our heart health as well. There is no magic one way fits all and it is important to create a plan that is doable and sustainable for you. Not sure where to start? Reach out to your family Doctor or find a Registered Dietitian that can work with you.
