Meet your Kids Yoga Teacher!

Mother of two girls and married to my highschool sweetheart for 15 years (22 years together). We moved to Seaforth in 2011 and this community has truly become our home.
I am the owner of Kathleen Rooyakkers (K.R.) Youth and Family Wellness whose main focus is teaching and promoting youth mental health and overall well-being.
Over the past five years, I’ve invested heavily in improving my mental health and well-being, often thinking how valuable it would have been to learn these skills at a younger age. This realization ignited a passion in me to share this knowledge and equip youth with the tools they can carry throughout their lives. While we can't eliminate life's challenges, we can help them develop the tools to face these challenges as the person they aspire to be, all while understanding the importance of self-care.
Physical activity is a powerful form of self-care, and yoga is an excellent example. The benefits of yoga extend far beyond physical activity. While it's widely recognized that yoga provides significant mental and physical benefits for adults, the advantages for children are equally profound.
For children, yoga can...
- ...teach breathing and relaxation techniques that help manage anxiety and stress. These are vital life skills that can support them from childhood through adulthood.
- ...cultivate presence by focusing on movements, those of others, and the sensations within their bodies. This fosters comfort in peace and calm, ultimately enhancing their ability to self-regulate and acknowledge their emotions.
- ...boost self-esteem, as children often underestimate their abilities, particularly when concerned about others' judgments. As they progress in yoga, mastering poses and working together, they gain a sense of personal growth and pride.
- ...promote body awareness and mindfulness through fun and play. While learning and practicing yoga poses, children discover how their bodies move and what they’re capable of, often surprising themselves.
- ...enhance concentration and memory. The poses, games, and activities require focus and memorization, skills that are beneficial in many areas of life.
- ...build strength and flexibility. Yoga supports the development of strong, flexible bodies, which is essential for reducing the risk of injury in other sports and activities.
These benefits make yoga an essential part of K.R. Youth and Family Wellness as we pursue our mission to equip today’s youth with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive in the modern world.
