Youth Lifting – Part 1
Weight training should never replace play. Playing a variety of sports is crucial for developing a well rounded athlete. In combination with play, weight training helps athletes improve in their sport. But is it dangerous for pre/young teens?
The simple answer, no. Weight training is incredibly safe {message me for sources on this…I have tons 🙂 }. Despite common myths, resistance training is not dangerous, and in fact the myth that weight lifting can stunt growth couldn’t be further from the truth.
Youth bones can in fact adapt positively to progressive loading from weight training, and there have been several studies stating increased bone mineral density in response to resistance and plyometric training, which are the bulk of Spartan training. When working with our athletes, we pride ourselves on keeping things safe. Our athletes don’t get to lift weight until they prove they can complete movement patterns effectively/safely.
