When I get a question about nutrition from multiple people, I’m usually pretty confident that there’s tons more people wondering the same thing.
Here’s the question I’ve been getting a lot lately: what’s the big deal about choosing whole wheat bread? Is it just the same as white bread?
If you were to look at the labels on both a loaf of white bread and a loaf of whole wheat, you might notice a few things. The calories and total carbs are likely the same. If we’re just focused on calories or carbs, that’s fine. But we know nutrition is more than that – it’s also about the quality of your food and what’s bringing the most nutrition to the table – literally!
Whole wheat or whole grain bread will have significantly more fibre per slice. Fibre helps keep us full, keeps our energy levels more stable, and is great for our bowel and heart health. You also get more of your B vitamins – these are taken out in the process of taking wheat from a whole grain to a white flour.
Look for bread where the first ingredient is whole grain flour or whole wheat flour to make sure you’re getting the most nutrition bang for your buck!
