What to do if you feel like you’re eating is out of control!

Written By: Registered Dietitian Mairead

Are you feeling just not your best and think the way you’ve been eating might be why? Do you know nutrition hasn’t been able to be a priority lately and want to bring it back into the picture?
Sometimes life just gets away from us and nutrition can’t be the most important thing – it’s normal!
Here are some do’s and don’ts to help you get back to feeling your best!
DO give yourself a break.
Fun fact – you’re only human and humans aren’t perfect all the time. Beating yourself up for some less-than-perfect eating isn’t going to make you feel any better now – remember that you’re doing the best you can and that we’re moving on now!
DON’T jump on a super restrictive diet.
It’s so tempting when our eating has been “off” to swing to the furthest extreme and be really strict about our diet. This actually usually sets people up for failure because it is just so different than what you’ve been doing.
You’re more likely to get frustrated and keep bouncing between being very strict with yourself and not prioritizing nutrition at all.
DO focus on one or two aspects of nutrition.
What are just a couple changes that wouldn’t be overwhelming to work on? By getting some momentum and success with small changes, you’ll feel more confident making bigger changes as you go.
DON’T forget to plan.
Think ahead to the next week or so – what’s coming up that might make you be quick to skip a meal or have more take-out than you really want to? What could we do or plan now to get on top of those ahead of time? By thinking about what hasn’t been working lately, we can keep nutrition priority, even when life seems crazy.
DO focus on what you can add to your eating habits.
Focusing on cutting foods out makes us feel restricted and wanting to push back. Focusing on adding foods in helps us avoid this. Do you need more fruits and vegetables? Protein at meals and snacks? More regular eating to avoid getting hangry? What can you add or do more of to prioritize nutrition?
You don’t have to get back on track on your own!
Making any changes alone can be hard, especially if you feel overwhelmed and like you don’t know where to start. If you know you need some help setting goals or some hand-holding along the way, let’s chat!
