What is the difference between a Coach & Access?

You’re thinking about joining a gym, starting an active lifestyle. Amazing – we are super proud of you!
With so many options out there, we want to debunk some of the myths, and create a clearer path for you when deciding what style of gym or fitness facility would be best for you.
There is no right answer; it all depends on what you enjoy the most, and what you can stick to consistently!
Coaching Based Gyms:
Like Degree, these will have group classes, programs or personal training led by a Coach. There is generally a class schedule, and appointments booked ahead of time. Your workouts and class flow will be laid out ahead of time.
Things to look for:
– Are the
Coaches certified ? (ie. Certified Personal Trainer, CrossFit L1/L2/L3, and so on)
– Do the Coaches and/or facility have current and up to date insurance coverage?
– Is the facility clean, organized and equipment in safe shape?
– Are the Staff organized and working as a Team?
– Are the Staff continually looking to increase their professional development?
Access Based Gyms:
These facilities will have their equipment laid out where you will go and do your workouts. There may be one Staff member on the floor floating, but more than likely, it will be just you and the other members using the facility at that time. Some of these are 24/7 access.
Things to look for:
– Does the facility have current and up to date insurance?
– Is the facility clean, organized and equipment in safe shape?
What to look for anywhere you go
– Do you feel safe and comfortable?
– Are you able to access a staff member for questions or help if needed?
– Are the rules and policies clear and easy to understand?
– Do you like it!
At the end of the day, whether you prefer a ‘access’ style where you can come and go to do your own thing, or, you thrive off the coaching based gyms more, it all comes down to ..
