I say this to clients and in social media posts all the time – “all foods fit”. But what does it mean and how does it help us improve our nutrition?
To start, when I say that all foods fit, it means exactly what it says. All foods can fit in a healthy diet. Obviously foods that you are allergic to are the exception. If you are someone who chooses to follow a diet that does eliminate foods for whatever reason, that’s fine. I’m speaking to the way of eating that I know helps most people improve their health in the long term and maintain a good relationship with food.
Food shouldn’t be stressful!
When we restrict a food because it’s a “bad” food or we “shouldn’t” eat it, we put that food up on a magic pedestal. That’s how we end up with certain foods that we swear we can’t have in the house without eating all of them.
When we give ourselves permission to eat those fun foods we’ve been restricting, we take away their power. They just become food.
Every single food you eat brings something to the table (yes, pun intended). Whether it’s fiber, vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables, long-lasting energy from whole grain carbs, protein to help repair muscles from meat or beans, or satisfaction from chocolate, all foods have something to contribute.
When we let all foods fit, we’re better able to identify how certain foods make us feel.
Lots of people think if they let themselves eat any chocolate, they’ll just eat it all day every day. But how would that make you feel? Probably not so great. We’re able to be our own little experiment and play with different combinations, meal ideas, and snacks to find out what really works for us, instead of just eating what we think we “should”. We find those foods that work for us and help us live our best and healthiest life, while creating super satisfying experiences with eating.
This process of learning to explore food and start including satisfying foods that you move is something I truly love helping our nutrition clients with.
