The Gray Area of Nutrition!

Written By: Registered Dietician Mairead

As humans, it’s really easy to think of things in very black-and-white terms. There are few places where this shows up as much as in nutrition. It only takes a few minutes of social media to find lists of things you should never eat, recommendations for eating plans that will help absolutely everyone lose weight, and broad sweeping claims that make nutrition seem a lot more simple than it really is.

At Degree, we like our nutrition habits to fall more into that Gray Area, instead of being so black-and-white.

We know that this helps our clients meet their goals, whatever they are, in more sustainable ways. We also know that what meets the needs of one person and works for them might not work for the next person!

Instead of thinking of foods as only good or only bad, let’s focus on what those foods do for us, and how we can use them.

Bread isn’t a bad food, it can provide fibre, carbs for energy, and be part of a quick and easy meal. We may think of spinach as a “good” food for also giving us fibre and lots of vitamins, but we can’t live on it alone. We might think we need to cut out all sugar, but then this level of restriction leaves us always craving it, or feeling like we can’t have any treats in the house.

If you’ve ever asked me a specific question about nutrition, there’s a good chance the answer began with “it depends…” and then some follow up questions to you. The answers are so rarely as cut-and-dry as we’d like.

If you’re ready to tackle your nutrition goals in a way that encompasses all of that gray area, it’s time to chat! There are limited spots available for appointments in January, and we want to meet with you.
