If you Google nutrition tips or diets, you will find zillions of answers telling you what to cut out of your diet or never to eat again. I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen a list titled something like”10 foods never to eat”.
My nutrition philosophy is to think about what can we ADD to your diet, instead of what we need to cut out.
The only time we definitely need to say you should never eat a specific food again is when you have a severe allergy or other physical long-term damage being caused by that food. I truly believe that all foods can fit in a healthy diet.
The best way to improve your nutrition is to look at what we could add to improve your health. Are you eating enough over the course of the day? Are you eating consistently? Are there any foods you might be restricting that are making you feel out of control?
Getting a bit more specific, are we getting enough of our macronutrients – ie. our carbs, fat and protein? Is one of these lower or higher than it needs to be? What about fibre? What about our omega 3 fatty acids? Are there any vitamins and minerals that we might be low in?
If there’s specific foods or types of food we’ve decided to limit for any reason, we can be setting ourselves up for a deficiency.
With all of those things to think about, where on earth should you start? A dietitian (that’s me!) can help you figure out what might be missing and prioritize what needs to be tackled first. We can work together to come up with strategies to address any gaps and add more nutrition in ways that actually fit with how you like to eat!
