Success Leads to Motivation

Written By: Coach James

I am sure that all of us, at some time in our lives, have said “I need to get motivated to do …” (You fill in the blank). This could be doing a school project, writing a report for work, cleaning out the garage. Whatever the action, we all feel like we need to find the “magical secret” (MOTIVATION) to help us to complete our task!
What if that approach is wrong? What if instead of waiting for something to motivate us to succeed, we take success (big or small) and let that lead to more and more motivation?
This new way of thinking about motivation can be applied to anything we want to accomplish, but for now, let’s apply this to exercise.
It is okay to think Big, but start Small. You have told yourself that you want to get into better shape, that’s great! Let’s break that down into smaller, more achievable goals. The big goal is to get into better shape, but the smaller more achievable goal may be to walk through the door at a gym to find out about their programs. That is your first success, which will motivate you to sign up for a program, success #2. You complete your first On ramp class, success #3, which motivates you to keep coming back. Next, you complete your On ramp program and beat your baseline workout time, success #4, which motivates you to sign up for a group class membership.
From there, the ball keeps rolling, as each new success motivates you to keep going and find more success.
This approach can also be applied to a specific skill, such as Double Unders! After lots of practice you are finally successful and get your first Double Under; You are super excited, and proud of yourself. Do you stop there? No, you have found success and now it has motivated you to do 2 Double Unders and then 3 and then multiple reps, until you are very comfortable doing them. One success leads to motivation to accomplish more.
Success = Motivation = More Motivation
Don’t wait for motivation to take action. Instead, take some form of action, which will lead to success, which in turn leads to motivation to find even more success! Any action is better than no action at all. Stop waiting for motivation, and start motivating yourself.
