We weren’t born walking, none of us could ride a bike well on the first try, and I’m sure many of us didn’t hop into the pool or lake without a lesson or two beforehand.
Why do we expect ourselves to be good at exercise movements, then, on the first day?
As humans, we are hard on ourselves! If we’re not good at something right away, our negative self talk starts getting louder, and sometimes, we quit all together because we just didnt’ get it right away.
We take all new members at Degree through our
OnRamp Program for this reason – we don’t expect people walking through the door on the first day to be able to do a handstand, deadlift 400lb or have the ‘perfect’ squat.
What most people find is that we (all) have things to improve on! No one’s movement patterns are perfect, and some of us will be inherently strong in push ups,but find squats challenging.
So, where am I going with this?
Don’t give up.
You may not be busting out multiple push ups in a row (yet). You may want to throw barbell away because you’re not great at the deadlift (yet). Maybe you see someone in the corner doing a bunch of pull ups – don’t let that discourage you.
We all start somewhere. It’s those that trust the process, allow themselves to be open to humility, flubbing it all up only to be stronger in the end.
Your push ups might feel hard on day one, however, imagine on day 365 if you stick to it? Man, nothing will stop you.
Don’t give up – we believe in you.
