Isometric exercise is one term you will hear often. An isometric exercise is holding a muscle contraction without moving any joints for a set period of time. We are exerting tension on the muscle group without lengthening or shortening it while still placing demand on the desired area.
Isometric exercises are often used for building strength in specific areas, enhancing stability and range of motion in one area at a time.
Isometric exercises are very useful when you have an injury to regain strength and range of motion.
People with limited range of motion due to arthritis or other joint issues benefit from isometrics to improve strength and to be able to move in ranges of motion that help to keep them as mobile as possible.
In short, isometrics are a useful tool in building strength and mobility in our overall fitness plans.
They require no equipment, can be done anywhere and can be a full workout on its own when planning out a workout!
