Is sea salt a better option for me?

Written By: Nutrition Coach Mairead

Most of us know that eating a lot of salt isn’t great for our health.
Eating excessive amounts of sodium from salt can increase our blood pressure, leading to further heart issues later on.
For most people, the most common ways we eat salt are when we’ve added it to food, either while cooking, at the table, or in our processed foods.
Often, people choose alternatives to normal white table salt, thinking that this could be a healthier option. This could include different kinds of sea salts, including all different colours and origins. But, are these salts really healthier for us?
While people might like these options because they are seen as a more natural option, they are still salt, just like your table salt, and will have the same amount of sodium.
Choosing different salts as a preference for taste or texture is absolutely fine but they will still have the same impact on your body as regular old white table salt.
If you’re looking to add flavour while keeping salt down, try adding different dried or fresh herbs and spices, salt-free seasonings, citrus juices or vinegar.
