Is breakfast really the most important meal of the day?

Written By: Registered Dietitian Mairead

You probably heard it growing up – breakfast is the most important meal of the day! But is this really true, and do you need to worry if you’re not a breakfast eater?
Read on to learn more about how breakfast can help you meet your nutrition goals, but probably isn’t something to panic about.
There are many reasons people choose not to eat breakfast – maybe you’re just not hungry in the morning, don’t have time, or you’re looking for an easy way to cut down on calories over the course of the day.
Breakfast isn’t necessarily more important than other meals for any reason, but there are some benefits to eating breakfast consistently.
1. Breakfast provides energy!
If you find yourself dragging through the morning at work, it could be because your body just doesn’t have the fuel it needs for your brain and body top function properly. Even a small breakfast could help give you the boost you need.
2. It helps you meet your nutrition needs!
If we’re missing an entire meal each day, we’re going to have to work harder to meet our nutrition needs overall. Not having breakfast increases the chance that you might be low on protein, fruits and vegetables, and your vitamins and minerals, unless you make a conscious effort to include snacks later or include large amounts in your other meals.
3. It prevents overeating!
Many people find that if they skip a meal in the morning, they’re more likely to be overly hungry later in the day and at night, and are more likely to reach for less healthy snacks. Including breakfast earlier in the day can help prevent this, which may help with weight loss and health goals.
So should you eat breakfast? At the end (or beginning!) of the day, it’s up to you.
Even a small satisfying breakfast can help you get the benefits above. Try including some kind of protein, a fruit or vegetable, and a high fibre carb for energy!
