In Defense of Inconsistency
By Mairead Rodgers Russell, Registered Dietitian
Consistency is key when it comes to health and fitness. Staying consistent is how we see people build muscle, set new PRs, run as fast as they can, reduce cholesterol, prevent diabetes… you get the picture. The people who achieve the greatest results of any kind in fitness are the ones who consistently prioritize their fitness and nutrition.
But what if life isn’t letting you be consistent right now?
Sometimes life is extra busy and the kids’ schedules are crazy and everyone keeps getting sick and the weather is awful. Maybe it’s a temporary season or maybe it’s going to last longer or maybe you just don’t know right now.
When it feels like you just can’t get to the gym as often as you’d like or eat as healthy as you’d like, it’s so tempting to just give up on everything. But when we can’t be consistent, the next best thing to be is inconsistent.
Being inconsistent but still hanging in there will get you further than giving up entirely. Can you expect the same outcomes as if you were able to be consistent? Probably not. But you’ll be further ahead than you would be otherwise.
Do what you can with whatever life looks like right now. Show up to class as often as you can. Find types of exercise that can be fit in more easily. Eat as well as you’re able when you’re able. Rely on convenience items where it makes sense to help you meet your nutrition needs. Work with your coaches or dietitian to brainstorm ways you can still work on your health and fitness goals even when those goals aren’t the biggest priority or have to be squeezed in.
The most important thing is that when we’re not able to show up the way we want to, we keep showing up for ourselves in the ways we can.
