GLP-1: Our Top Two Tips

Written by: Kelly Nicholson, Owner and Head Coach

We’re in an interesting time on all levels, and with the introduction of GLP-1 drugs this can make the world of fitness, weight loss, muscle mass, etc. even murkier than it already was.

At Degree, we work with all different body shapes and sizes. All different fitness levels, abilities and all different personal goals or desires each person has for their own fitness and health.

Our job is not to judge – it’s to support our members in their choices, and help them navigate their fitness and health in a way that makes sense for them and is safe and effective.

Our job, also, is to educate our clients and community on these topics as the use becomes more mainstream, specifically for weight loss purposes.

When we have a Client or Member that is using GLP-1 drugs, we have two focus points we want them to keep in mind, and ensure continue to happen when using them:

Continue to strength/resistance train

When we lose weight, this doesn’t always mean just body fat; if not managed responsibly, this can also mean in some cases muscle mass and bone density.

This is why we recommend that anyone using a GLP-1 drug continue, or add in strength or resistance training into their regular routine. This is going to help them maintain their. muscle mass which is integral to overall function in our life, integral for many body functions and overall needed for energy and injury prevention.

As well, strength training helps to increase and maintain our bone density. With loss of bone density this can lead to osteoporosis, which increases our risk of injury in our every day life.

Make sure you are eating a balanced diet

When we eat less, this also means we take in less nutrients. Things like protein, fats, vitamins and minerals. All of these are required for our body to function optimally for fitness, immune response, mood, hormones, etc.

So, if we are eating less due to less of an appetite, we want to make sure we prioritize whole foods when we are eating to maximize that we are taking in!

If a client or member was starting to experience frequent fatigue, irritability, their workouts are feeling much harder than they used to, or they stop seeing strength or cardio gains, then we would encourage a follow up with their Doctor or healthcare provider.

Also, we would recommend booking a consultation with our Registered Dietitian who can give you the exact tools you need to make sure that that you’re filling the gaps, being educated, and being as safe as possible if you are using GLP-1 drugs, !

Even if you’re not using GLP-1’s, hitting your workouts and making sure you’re eating well should still be a priority!
