There’s a lot of information about nutrition out there. Every week, I talk to clients who are overwhelmed trying to figure out the best way to eat from the new fancy diet book or a link on Facebook their friend posted. If you’re feeling swamped and overwhelmed, it’s no wonder! Half the information you read conflicts with the other half, and it’s hard to know what sources are actually giving you credible information!
We so often get caught up in the “weeds” of nutrition, and forget to look at the big picture.
The tiny details aren’t the things that give us the biggest benefits – the big picture things are!
Exactly which berry is highest in antioxidants isn’t helpful information if we aren’t already eating enough fruits and vegetables on a regular basis. A supplement to give more energy usually won’t be as effective at giving you a boost 3pm as having a balanced snack might be. The exact number of grams of protein you need isn’t as important as including protein at all meals and most snacks, and getting it from a variety of sources.
When we get so caught up on the minor details of our diet, we forget to focus on the big things that have the most impact.
Are you eating enough? Are you including vegetables and fruit? Protein? Healthy fats? Are we good at paying attention to when we’re hungry and when we’re full? Are we getting enough variety in our nutrition?
Avoid overwhelming yourself with information. Focus on the big picture with your nutrition; and if you don’t know where to start or can’t zoom out enough on your own, it’s time to enlist some help. Work with a dietitian to tweak your diet to fit your goals and get evidence-based nutrition advice!
There’s very limited availability for nutrition consultations until the end of April, and Nutrition Consultations and On-Going Coaching will be on hold from May to the beginning of September.
