The next time you are in the gym I want you to listen closely to the words that you use when you are working out!
The way we talk to ourselves is carried over to our actions and how well we perform not only in the gym but in our daily activities.
Words can either build up or tear down our confidence, not only the words…listen to the tone of your voice, even the one inside your head! When we set up expectations of what we want out of the workout and don’t reach them we tend to be harder on ourselves with self criticism.
When we catch ourselves saying certain phrases try rewording them to see if that might just change how we approach the time in class.
When we say: Try saying:
“I can’t do that!” “I am going to do my best to learn”
“I not good at this” “What am I missing to get better at this”
“This feels terrible today” “This may not be my best today but I am moving”
“ This is too difficult” “This is challenging but I’m going to try”
“I’m always the last one done” “I am working at the best pace for me today”
“They are better than me” “ I’m doing the best that I can”
When you catch yourself using negative words, stop, take a breath, reword your thoughts in a positive way and just maybe you will see that you are doing the best you can at this given time!
Some days we need to give ourselves a break and just move. Your fitness journey is a continuous road to a stronger and healthier version of yourself, be proud of what you can do and keep reaching for your goals. It is a constant work in progress! You’ve got this!
