Although the warm weather has held on later than normal this year, we know the cold winter months are still coming. If you’re like a lot of the clients I talk to, that can leave us craving our favourite comfort foods, and not sure how this fits with our health and fitness goals!
If the change in seasons is changing your eating habits, you’re not alone.
While there’s no definitive answer on why this happens, there’s lots of theories. It might be because it’s dark out earlier and it’s cold so we’re not out and about as much – often we turn to food. Some scientists think there could be an evolutionary aspect that makes us want to hibernate a bit. A lot of food-centric holidays also fall in the colder months, making us look forward to our favourite treats. No matter why this happens, it doesn’t have to derail our health and fitness goals!
Stressing about your cravings generally only makes us frustrated. Trying to resist them often leads to eating even more than we planned.
Instead, what if you found ways to make these favourite foods part of a balanced diet?
Try these ideas!
Craving something sweet? Choose a small portion and take a moment for yourself. Get away from distractions and really take the time to enjoy it. Maybe pair it with a hot coffee or tea for a super cozy experience.
Craving creamy and starchy dishes? Balance out the plate! Make sure to include a source of protein to keep your energy levels stable, and load up on the vegetables on the side to pack in some nutrition.
Looking for a warm comforting bowl of soup? Make it a meal by adding some whole grain toast for fibre and a source of protein so you’re not hungry again in an hour.
Digging into chilis or stews? Aim for as many vegetables as you can. Try going a bit lighter on the meat and bulking your dish up with beans or lentils for a plant-protein boost.
