Are you someone who says you’re an “all or nothing” person? If you’re not sure, think about whether you’re someone who goes all-in on health or fitness changes, but then falls back to old habits if you can’t do it perfectly. Think about if you find that when your habits are really good, they’re perfect, but when they’re off, everything is off.
That “all or nothing” mindset can be huge for motivation and getting started with a new program or habit!
You’re ready to dive in and take on everything. You’re so committed and ready to do everything you need to do. That’s amazing, and that motivation is what gets you going with anything new!
But what happens if we can’t do the thing perfectly? Maybe life gets busy and we miss a workout or two. Maybe we can’t eat exactly perfectly one day because we’re on the road for work or our plans change. Are you going to give up because you can’t keep up your habits perfectly? If we’re stuck in “all or nothing” thinking, you just might.
But what if we reframe to “all or something”? This means even if we can’t do something perfectly, we do what we can.
Can’t do your normal 4 workouts a week? Make it to 1 or 2 if you can and try to get out for a walk when you have time. Can’t eat absolutely perfectly? Aim for getting in enough water and including some vegetables where you can.
The idea is that doing something is always better than doing nothing.
Changing this thinking keeps us going on our health and fitness journey. If we throw in the towel every time we can’t be all-in, we’ll always have to keep starting over. If we change our thinking, we can stop starting over, and instead just keep going.
Remember, we’re thinking “all or something”, instead of “all or nothing”!
