Adding to Your Resolutions
Written By: Mairead Rodgers Russell, Registered Dietitian
As the New Year approaches, so does the talk of New Year’s resolutions, setting goals, and “new year, new you”. So often these goals come from a place of cutting things out and being “good”, especially after the holiday season. When we’re talking about removing things from our diets, we focus only on what we can’t have. What if we focused on what we could add in 2026?
Instead of overhauling all of your fitness and health habits, let’s assume they’re going at least OK for this season of life and let’s use those habits to build off of.
What are you already doing well that you can add to?
Maybe you’re feeling great in the gym and want to add to that. That could look like adding one more day at the gym per week if the schedule allows.
It could look like adding in some low intensity cardio outside of the gym in the form of walking, running or biking.
It could include focusing on stretching and mobility at home a couple times a week.
It could look like adding a fun new goal, like a specific race or competition.
We’re not aiming for perfect or extremes, we’re just adding to what is already going well!
When it comes to nutrition, there’s lots of ways to add to your existing habits!
Maybe you focus on adding variety by trying new fruits and vegetables, spices, or recipes regularly throughout the year. Maybe you know you would feel better if you added protein to most meals and snacks.
Maybe bowel health is key for you and you focus on adding fibre.
Again, this doesn’t have to look extreme – the goal is to prioritize things you can add to your diet that will improve your overall health and wellbeing!
Your goals don’t have to come from a place of cutting things out of your life or starting all over from scratch. To create lasting changes that will benefit your health and fitness for the long-term, think about what you can add to your life that builds on what you’re already doing!
