5 Tips for a Healthier Summer!
Written by: Mairead, Registered Dietitian
Summer brings changes to routine! Maybe you’re traveling, camping, or spending time at a cottage. Maybe there’s more BBQs and get-togethers in your schedule. Maybe it’s just less structured because kids are out of school and the weather is warm!
With all of that, it can be hard to keep your healthy eating habits and workouts on track. Check out our best tips for a healthier summer!
- Stay hydrated! Drinking enough water can be one of the easiest places to start, and one good habit lead to another! No matter where you are this summer, try to keep a water bottle with you. If you love cold water, add ice or use an insulated bottle. For more information about staying hydrated this summer, check out our blog post!
- Find new ways to keep your body moving! If your schedule is looking a bit different, your workouts might too. Try to keep the same frequency of your workouts, even if there needs to be some tweaks. If it’s too hot to workout at your normal time, see if you can workout earlier in the day. If you’re away from home, check out another gym, or go for a walk or hike to explore a new area. Even running around playing a sport with family or swimming in a lake will all add up. Just find ways to keep moving that work for you in this season!
- Aim for a balanced plate! A balanced plate includes a half plate of vegetables and fruit, a quarter plate of protein foods, and a quarter plate of carbs and starches. The beauty of this method is that you can adapt it easily, no matter where you are. You can use these guidelines to fill your plate at any BBQ or potluck. If you’re busy and need to prep ahead or rely on convenient options, you can still easily put together a meal that fits into the balanced plate.
- Include your favourite treats! If you totally restrict seasonal treats, you may end up feeling like you’re missing out, which can make you more likely to overdo it when you “give in” or just when a treat is available. Instead, try planning in your favourite treats every so often throughout the summer months and really taking the time to slow down and enjoy those treats. The more you savour them, the more satisfied you’ll be without going overboard.
- Watch the alcohol! Everyone knows at this point that alcohol isn’t good for you. It can increase your risk of many chronic diseases, and slow down your recovery from workouts. While many people drink more alcohol during the summer months, moderation is key. Try drinking a glass of water or soda water between each drink if you’re drinking socially, looking for nonalcoholic options where possible, and making sure you have some alcohol-free days every week.
We hope these tips help you stay healthy and keep working towards your fitness goals this summer, without missing out on the fun!
