Snacking has a bad rap. So many people feel panicked if they need a snack during the day, worried that it will derail any progress they’ve made in their healthy eating goals.
Snacks can actually be great for us for so many reasons!
Here are four reasons you might need a snack today:
To keep your energy up!
We see you, busy people! You have stuff to do and need the energy to do it. Food is your body’s source of energy – without enough of it, and a regular supply, you just won’t be able to keep up with everything you need and want to do. If you find yourself crashing hard between meals (3pm slump, anyone?) and notice you’re going longer than four or five hours, it could be worth adding a snack between meals instead of another coffee or three.
To prevent overeating later!
Have you ever gone too long between meals, then found yourself overly hungry when you do get to eat, and then eat well past the point of fullness, maybe barely tasting your food?
If you find this happening often, it’s a sign we need a snack! The goal is to time our eating and use our snacks so that we come to our meals comfortably hungry and ready to eat, but not so hungry we’re not even going to enjoy our food.
To fuel your workouts!
If you’re a mid-day or evening exerciser, how long has it been between when you last ate and when your workout starts? If you find yourself feeling low on energy right before or during your workout, your body might need a bit more fuel to help you get the most out of your workouts!
To meet your nutrition needs!
Is there something you know is missing in your diet? Whether you’re focusing on broad categories like vegetables or protein, or dialing in on specific micronutrients like calcium or iron, snacks can be the perfect opportunity to sneak more nutrition in! Trying to meet all our needs with just three meals a day can feel impossible and snacks make it easier.
