Like most of us, I’m sure you’re staying home more than normal right now. While we’ve been living in the COVID-19 pandemic for a while now, there’s still some uncertainty and we know everyone’s mental health isn’t quite as great as we’d hope.
Here are some nutrition tips and tricks to help boost your mental health with the way you’re eating:
1. Keep your energy levels stable!
Do you ever find yourself feeling more irritable than normal or unable to focus, and then realize it’s because you’re hungry? Feeding yourself consistently helps keep our blood energy levels and blood sugars stable throughout the day, helping you think clearly and avoid getting “hangry”.
Try having a meal or snack every 3-4 hours throughout the day, and including both some high fibre carbs (like fruit, whole grain crackers or bread, or starchy vegetables) and protein to help keep you going.
2. Avoid restricting certain foods!
Any time we restrict a certain food or type of food, we’re adding extra stress to our life. Who needs extra stress right now? Instead, try focusing on what you can add. Can you boost the nutrition of this meal with some vegetables? Are there any nutrients you might not have had enough of today that you could add to a snack?
The goal for nutrition and eating is to be a positive experience, not something that makes your life more difficult.
3. Eat enough fibre!
Fibre doesn’t just keep you regular (although that does reduce your stress too) – it also helps maintain the good bacteria in your gut! Having a healthy gut may help reduce some symptoms of anxiety and depression. Women need 25g of fibre daily, while men need 38g. Try boosting your fruit and vegetable intake by choosing more whole grains and legumes, and practicing label reading to help you meet your needs!
