1. Shop in-season produce! Spring, summer and early fall are THE BEST times to shop in-season produce. You might be able to find some fruits and vegetables at a lower price in your local grocery store, and there will be many more options at farmers’ markets in the area. Find a great deal on something but can’t use it right away? Freeze it for later. You’ll love pulling that produce back out in the winter!
2. Clean out your fridge before going away! Lots of us are more likely to travel during the summer months. Before you head out the door, whether it’s for a few days or a few weeks, check your fridge for anything that might not be tasty or safe to eat when you get back. Many items, including meats, fruits and vegetables, cheese, and even milk can be frozen for later. Other foods might make great snacks to bring along with you!
3. Store food properly! Summer is hot, and fresh foods can go bad more quickly in the heat. To avoid having to throw things away, make sure all foods are stored in the best way possible. Check your fridge’s user manual for tips for your crisper drawers. Store milk and dairy products in the back of the fridge at the bottom where they’ll stay coldest. Put leftovers away in time so they don’t spoil in the heat. Freeze any foods you won’t use in plastic zip-top bags or reusable silicone bags and remove as much air as possible to avoid freezer burn.
