3 ways to get your nutrition back on track!

Written By: Nutrition Coach Mairead

Fall is always a transitional time – kids are going back to school and new fall routines are coming back! This often means it’s a time when people are keen to make some changes with their nutrition.
Whether you feel like your habits were different just over the summer, or since everything changes due to Covid, we’ve got some tips to help you get back to feeling on track!
Get clear on what you want to change!
It’s time to think big picture – what’s bugging you about your nutrition habits right now? What do you want to be different? Do you feel sluggish and know some diet changes would help? Is food and nutrition adding stress to your life? Have you been told by your healthcare provider that there are some things that should change? Once you know what you want to change, we can go from there! And if you know what you want to change but don’t know where to start or how to do that, that’s the perfect time to talk to your friendly neighborhood dietitian!
Pick one thing!
At one point or another, we’ve all tried to change everything at once. We’re going to go vegan, workout 5 days a week, drink a ton of water, take all our supplements, journal, meditate, walk every day…. are you exhausted just reading that? Pick one thing you can focus on to start, and get really good at that.
Doing one thing consistently will have more of a benefit than doing a bunch of stuff inconsistently, and it’s less stressful!
What’s one thing you could focus on right now? Maybe it’s drinking enough water, eating a satisfying breakfast, or getting in a fruit or vegetable at all meals. Does this one change go with that thing above that you want to be different?
Pick realistic changes!
Trying to fit unrealistic nutrition changes into your life is like trying to put a square peg in a round hole. It just doesn’t work! Be honest with yourself about whether whatever you’re changing makes sense in your life right now. Does it fit with your schedule? Do you have time? Will it cause more stress than it’s worth? Realistic changes are the ones we’re most likely to stick with for the long term, not just for this week.
What changes are you planning to make to your nutrition habits this fall?
